Kakadu National Park is the
home to nature’s lovers and place of enormous ecological and biological
diversity. Kakadu National Park is Australia’s largest terrestrial national
park.
Kakadu National Park
is Located 240 kilometres east of Darwin in Australia’s tropical north. Kakadu
covers almost 20,000 square kilometres. The
majority of the park still remains the property of Indigenous Australians. They are known as
Bininj/Mungguy. They have a long history in the
area. Their heritage can be viewed in the rock art galleries of Kakadu, some of
the most impressive and best-preserved galleries in Australia. Knowledgeable
guides will explain how the social and cultural history of the local Indigenous
groups can be traced through the stories told on the rocks. Kakadu National Park
has a tropical monsoon climate with six seasons - Wurrgeng, Gurrung,
Gunumeleng, Gudjewg, Banggerreng, Yegge. These landscapes are home to a range
of rare and endemic plants and animals, including more than one-third of
Australia's bird species and one-quarter of its freshwater and estuarine fish
species. More than 2000 plant species have been recorded in Kakadu. Some of them
are Pandanus, Speargrass, Kapok bush,
Darwin woollybutt. Kakadu
contains 280 bird species, 68 mammal species, 26 frog species & 120 reptile
species. Some are Leichardt's grasshoppers,
Crocodiles, Quolls, Flatback turtles, Comb-crested jacana, Partridge pigeon,
Brolga, Brolga.
Over 300 fish species have been recorded in tidal and freshwater areas within the
Park.
Kakadu is considered to be one of the most weed-free
conservation areas in the world. 683,000 hectares of Kakadu wetlands are listed
as RAMSAR protected wetlands of international importance. Kakadu National Park
is listed as a World Heritage Area and as a UNESCO site. Some preparation
should be taken before going to the park. Early morning and sunset are good
times to see wildlife. Use a torch at night to look for nocturnal animals. Use
binoculars to get a closer look. Do not approach, disturb or feed wildlife. Visitors can choose between the hundreds of guided tours on
offer, or can choose to take their own vehicle to explore at their own pace. There
is no end to the wonders Kakadu. If you’ve got a weekend or a month to spend
there, it is sure to leave visitors wanting more in Kakadu National Park.
