Sydney Opera House serves as
one of the best known icons of Australia. Sydney Opera House is one of the most
distinctive and famous 20th-century buildings, and one of the most famous
performing arts venues in the world.
Sydney Opera House is located in Bennelong
Point in Sydney Harbour Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The building and
its surroundings form an iconic Australian image. It is a great architectural
work that brings together multiple strands of creativity and innovation in both
architectural form and structural design. Jørn Utzon, a Danish architect
designed the Opera House. It was opened
to the general public by Queen Elizabeth II, on October 20, 1973. The Opera House took
sixteen years to build and ten times more than its original estimated cost. The Opera House covers 4.5 acres of land. It is 183 meters
long and about 120 meters wide, the entire site covers an area of 5.798
hectares. The opera house's roof is constructed
of 1,056,000 glazed white granite tiles imported from Sweden. It is supported
on 580 concrete piers sunk up to 25 metres below sea level. It has about 1000
rooms. The theatres are contained in a series of large shells, modeled by
dissecting a globe. The Concert Hall and Opera Theatre are contained in the
largest shells, and the other theatres are located on the sides of the shells. There
are seven performance venues: the Concert Hall, the Opera Theatre, Playhouse,
Drama Theatre, The Studio, the Forecourt and the Utzon Room. The Concert Hall of the Opera House has 2,679 seats and is
the home of the Sydney Symphony. The Opera Theatre is basically a proscenium
theatre, with 1,547 seats, which serves as the Sydney home of Opera Australia
and The Australian Ballet. The Drama Theatre is another proscenium theatre. It
has 544 seats and is used by the Sydney Theatre Company and other dance and
theatrical presenters. The Playhouse is an end-stage theatre, with a seating
capacity of 398 people. The Studio of Opera House is a flexible space, with a
maximum capacity of 400 people. The Concert Hall contains the Sydney Opera
House Grand Organ. It is the largest mechanical tracker action organ in the
world with over 10,000 pipes.
